Free & Reduced Program
The National School Lunch Program is a federally assisted meal program operating in public and nonprofit private schools and residential child care institutions. It provides nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free lunches to children each school day. The program was established under the National School Lunch Act, signed by President Harry Truman in 1946.
Students can receive free or reduced price meals (this does not include A la Carte items) if their family’s gross household income is at or below the federal income guidelines shown below. Most foster children, and those receiving Food Assistance, Temporary Assistance to Families (TAF), or Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR) benefits are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. Children in households participating in the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program may also be eligible.
Reduced Price Meals:
Parents should complete only ONE application per household. Please allow up to 10 days for processing once the Student Nutrition Department has received the application. Email, letter or phone call will be made letting you know if the household qualifies for free or reduced-priced meals. It is important to make sure the schools have the correct contact information including home address, email or phone. If you need to make changes to your contact information, please contact the school where the child attends.
PLEASE READ THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY. INCOMPLETE OR INCORRECT APPLICATIONS CANNOT BE PROCESSED.
A new application is required every school year. Parents may return the application to the Student Nutrition office located at the District Administration office 330 E. Hwy 24-40 Tonganoxie, KS 66086. Applications must have an original signature; therefore we do not accept copied, e-mailed, or faxed applications. Applications are approved in the order received at the Student Nutrition Department.
If a child was receiving free or reduced-priced meals at the end of the last school year, their benefits will continue for the first 30 school days; This allows parents enough time to submit a new application for review without the child losing benefits. It is strongly recommended that the new application be submitted as soon as possible to allow ample time for processing. Unless the previous year’s benefits are carrying over during the first 30 school days, you will be required to pay full price for meals until the processing and determination of meal benefits has been completed.
Tonganoxie Student Nutrition Department offers an online option for completing an application for meal benefits. It is simple, fast and free! Once the online application is completed, The Student Nutrition Department will receive it, finalize the determination of benefits and email, mail a letter or make a phone call to notify the household. The online approval process eliminates several steps, making it the fastest way to apply.
If you do not wish to apply online, you may print the Child Nutrition application and once completed take it the Student Nutrition Department located at the District Administration Office.
When filling out the application, you are required to provide the following:
The identity of the students who receive free or reduced price meals is confidential. All students are treated the same, regardless of ability to pay. In the operation of the school breakfast and lunch programs, no child will be discriminated against because of race, color, national origin, age or handicap.
